Names of God — El Shaddai
1When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty; walk before me and be blameless. 2I will confirm my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers.” Genesis 17:1-2
11And God said to him, “I am God Almighty; be fruitful and increase in number. A nation and a community of nations will come from you, and kings will come from your body. 12The land I gave to Abraham and Isaac I also give to you, and I will give this land to your descendants after you.” Genesis 35:11-12
Normally translated God Almighty, His name El Shaddai means “the all-sufficient One”. Our God is all-powerful. Our God is the all-sufficient source of all our blessings. Every good and perfect gift comes from Him (James 1:17). He was powerful enough to greatly increase the numbers of a man who was “as good as dead” (Romans 4:19, Hebrews 11:12).
This God — El Shaddai — is also powerful enough to bear your burdens. You don’t have a problem too big for Him to handle. Cast all your burdens on Him who cares for you (1 Peter 5:7).
