Names of God – Jehovah-Rapha

25Then Moses cried out to the LORD, and the LORD showed him a piece of wood. He threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. There the LORD made a decree and a law for them, and there he tested them. 26He said, “If you listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the LORD, who heals you.” (Exodus 15:25-26)

God showed plenty of times that He could heal. Jesus – God With Us – also showed Himself to be Jehovah-Rapha, God Who Heals. In fact, as many times as He showed His power over physical sickness, He declared His reason for coming was to effect our spiritual healing (Luke 5:31-32). He healed the physically sick, the lame, and those who were blind, but He showed His power over spiritual sickness and death by offering us spiritual healing, wholeness, and sight.

He is still the Great Physician, even today. Let’s thank Him now for bringing us the life in Him that we so desperately needed.

15Moses built an altar and called it The LORD is my Banner. 16He said, “For hands were lifted up to the throne of the LORD. The LORD will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation.” Exodus 17:15-16

A banner in ancient battle held special significance. It was symbolic of the nation or of the regiment that was fighting, and with it carried much pride. It was a great honor to be the one to carry the banner into battle, ahead of the army. Moses built an altar to commemorate God as banner of the Israelites. They had just defeated the Amalekites, during which battle Moses held his staff in his hands. As long as his hands were raised, the Israelites were winning; when he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. (Exodus 17:8-16)

The staff was not the banner of the Israelites. God was their banner. He was the one who led them in battle. He was the one who deserved the Israelites’ trust and their pride. When He was victorious, they were victorious.

Who is it that leads you into battle against the wicked one? Are you strong enough to wage these battles on your own? Do you enter the battle without armor, or do you wear the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18)?

Just as the LORD was Israel’s banner, He is willing to be yours – but you must allow Him to fulfill that role.

12The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 13“But as for you, speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘You shall surely observe My sabbaths; for this is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I am the LORD who sanctifies you.'” (Exodus 31:12-13 NASV)

We are a people set apart by God, who made us holy through His Son (Hebrews 13:12). As a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9), we should live lives holy & pleasing to God (1 Peter 1:15-16).

Just as Jehovah Mekaddishkem sanctified His people the Israelites, He has sanctified us.
