Good question, right? Our world is consumed with having “things,” but what will you take with you when you die? In this world today, it is so easy to get caught up trying to make money that it can become the number one cause in our lives. We simply get so very caught up in making money that we forget how brief our lives are compared to Eternity and our eternal life. God warned us about this when He told us that our life is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. (James 4:14) Try blowing out a breath on a cold winter day, and you will see how quickly that brief burst of fog disappears!
We also may become easily distracted by those around us who are so consumed by the love of money that they have lost sight of what is most important. For what shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? (Mark 8:36) If the truth be known, the people who seek first the wealth of this world often have very unhappy lives, for it is written: For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. ( I Timothy 6:10) Note that is not the money itself which is evil, but rather the LOVE of money which causes us to stray from God, doing things we ought not do for the sake of making more money.
Now, that certainly does not mean that we should have to live in a life of poverty. God wants His children to prosper; after all, He said, Be strong and courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go. (Joshua 1:7) Yes, that is in the Old Testament, but God still loves us and wants us to prosper as long as we put Him first in our lives.
So when others distract you it is important to remember that as a child of God, you have an even better life ahead of you! That life, in Heaven, has no pain, no sorrow, no sickness, nor any other adversity! A life with the angels, the archangels, and all the Company of Heaven. An eternal life with God and your loved ones who have already passed on before you. So set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth ( Colossians 3:2) and Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in Heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt and where thieves do not break through nor steal. (Matthew 6:19-20) Please note: In Job 1:21, we are reminded that we came into the world naked, and we shall leave the same way. The only “goods” we will have in Heaven will NOT be taken with us when we die. Instead, they will be those sent on before us.
Therefore, I urge you to concentrate on storing up riches in Heaven in advance. And, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers. (III John 2) And surely, our riches in Heaven will prosper as our soul prospers when we are the obedient children of God.
What say ye?
